About this series

The brief was a single prop and a single colour. That sounds restrictive until you realise a chair gives somebody something to do with their hands, their weight and their attention, which is most of what makes a portrait difficult.

We shot for three hours and used about eight minutes of it. The rest was talking, moving the light a hand-width at a time, and waiting for the moment the pose stopped looking like a pose.
